Family Friendly binges:
Lost in Space
Lost in Space has two binge-worthy seasons on Netflix. It's totally family friendly and it’s packed with action and adventure. I loved this series because it is so well made, the cinematography alone sets it apart from other shows of its genre. Each episode makes it feel like you’re at a movie theatre watching an action movie that keeps giving you more. There’s that much stress (I mean, drama and action), and you can tell a lot of work (and money) was put into making this show a masterpiece.
Synopsis: "In the aftermath of an impact event that threatens the survival of humanity, the Robinson family is selected for the 24th mission of the Resolute (24th Colonist Group), an interstellar spacecraft carrying selected families to colonize the Alpha Centauri star system. Before they reach their destination, an alien robot breaches the Resolute's hull. Forced to evacuate the mothership in short-range Jupiter spacecraft, scores of colonists, among them the Robinsons, crash on a nearby habitable planet. There they must contend with a strange environment and battle their own personal demons as they search for a way back to the Resolute.
Locke & Key
WOW. Okay. I just finished binge watching this last night on Netflix. I did not expect to like this show as much as I did but I truly could not stop watching. I’m not a huge fan of horror, but I do like for things to be a little bit scary/creepy. This show is great because it’s also family friendly (There’s one makeout scene that lasts maybe 3 seconds and that’s it), and there’s one scary jump out moment (I HATE those, but this one was brief). I wouldn’t necessarily watch this with really young kids, but pre-teens and teens? I don’t have kids so don’t quote me on this, but just know this is a great show you can binge with the family that both kids and adults will really enjoy. It’s not gorey—it doesn’t do anything a lot of scary shows try to do like be gorey and violent just for the sake of it. It’s so well made that it truly creeps you out without making you feel like you’re watching a scary show. I’m a huge wimp when it comes to this kind of stuff and although it was definitely scary—like very scary at times—there’s plenty of moments where you can catch your breath and they’ll show day to day interactions that do not have demons hunting them down for magical keys.
All in all, try it out, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Also, I have to note that I cannot stop watching the scene in the second to last episode when the Billie Eilish song “you should see me in a crown” comes on…WOW. Just wow. You will know what I’m talking about when you get there. Final comment: Darby Stanchfield (the red headed actress from Scandal) gives an incredible performance in this. Also, she can look super creepy when she wants to (stay away from mirrors). And Sherri Saum (one of the moms in The Fosters), also shines in this series. (Make a mental note—watch Scandal and The Fosters).
Synopsis: Three siblings who move into their ancestral estate after their father's murder discover their new home's magical keys, which must be used in their stand against an evil creature who wants the keys and their powers.
To watch with your significant other:
Dirty John
I loved this series and would watch it again (available on Hulu and Netflix). Connie Britton and Eric Bana star in this psychological thriller that is actually based off a true story (OMG). Both you and your significant other will love this show, and I guarantee at least one of you will be yelling at the TV. Expect to probably talk through this show a bit, because there is a lot to unpack here.
Synopsis: Debra's seemingly perfect life is disrupted as she falls for a handsome doctor who sweeps her into a whirlwind romance. But her handsome new beau pulls Debra into a sinister game of psychological manipulation.
Flack
My husband just started this last night and cannot stop binging it (this is RARE). So of course I have to put this on here. I’ve only watched the first episode and he is halfway through the season already—but my first impression was a great one! I love Anna Paquin in this role, she plays it effortlessly.
Synopsis: Robyn, an American publicist working for a cutthroat London PR company that represents troubled celebrities, is adept at keeping her client's lives appearing in perfect order, while her own falls to pieces.
Girls Night
Younger
I absolutely adore this show. It’s created by Darren Star (Sex in the City) so of course I knew I’d fall in love with it. Very easy to watch, funny, drama when it needs it, and great performances by this whole cast. I’ve now been to their screening and panel Q&A twice at the ATX Television Festival and the cast is so sweet and down to earth. Best part? There’s seven seasons (84 bite-sized episodes that are about 22 min long.) Binge away and enjoy!
Synopsis: After being mistaken for younger than she really is, a single mother decides to take the chance to reboot her career and her love life as a 26-year old.
