GREEK Reunion!

If you haven’t watched GREEK yet, you need too. I watched it when it first came out years ago, then watched it again, and as we got closer to the ATX Television festival, I started rewatching it for a third time. It’s one of those shows where you can pay attention the whole time, or you can just let it play in the background. I literally have it playing in the background as I type this out. It is one of my top “comfort” shows for sure, and I was beyond thrilled to hear that there would be a cast reunion at the festival.

For those that are already GREEK fans (or soon to be fans of it!) below are some things that the cast shared and lots of fun facts!

  • Casey had some hesitancy when she was trying out for her part of Casey, because she didn’t like that her character would be hooking up with Cappy just to get back at Evan, it was sort of a moral compass issue for her.

  • Franny actually originally tried out for the part of Casey (I literally cannot imagine her as anyone but Franny so it all worked out!)

  • Rusty’s voice was SO low in person. Okay not that low but you can tell he has definitely grown up! And you’ll be happy to know he’s kind of goofy and quirky in person too just like his character

  • Remember that infamous scene that gives Rusty the name “Spitter”? (Where he spits out what probably is his first drink of alcohol ever, all over the girl he is being convinced to take a body shot off of at Kappa Tau?) They were rehearsing one time and he wasn’t supposed to actually spit out the liquid, so it was a shock to everyone and this whole ordeal where they had to cut and bring hair and makeup back in

  • Heath was playing golf when he got a callback to read for the show, and he showed up to it two and a half hours late because he wanted to finish his round of golf first!

  • The creator of the show was truly just looking to find people that he felt he could personally be friends with and have a connection with where it felt like a family

  • The characters of Casey and Rusty were the most difficult to cast, both as individual characters but also in finding two people that could have that brother sister chemistry on screen

  • VERY fun fact: Rusty was almost cast as Dale! Can you imagine?!

  • The creator took the whole cast to Mexico and the network (ABC Family) was like “umm we don’t have insurance for that”

  • In the original writing, Rebecca asks Casey for cocaine, they even filmed her snorting a line before changing the scene. Obviously because it was ABC Family, they couldn’t really do that!

  • Gossip Girl came out right after GREEK did, and it was super edgy--one of the first scenes is Blake Lively sipping on a martini at 16 years old

  • The creator said that what the audience is responding to authentically exemplifies GREEK, they didn’t need to be edgy just for the sake of being edgy

  • This was one of the last shows to shoot on 35mm film

  • When asked if a revival was ever made, where would the characters be right now: Heath and Calvin would have three kids. Casey would have continued her political career and be married to Cappy, but then imagine a sort of “The Graduate” type of situation where Evan runs in and stops their wedding from happening and they run away together (um that sounds terrible! Stay with Cappy!)

  • There actually WAS a script written for a revival

  • TV ratings for the show were good but not great, it’s iTunes downloads of the show that really saved the day and helped it stay on the air

It was so bizarre to see the cast in person, I pretty much “grew up” with this show. It felt like I was seeing my actual friends in front of me. Of course this show came out before social media was really popular, so I never added the cast on social media until this reunion. And I have to admit, watching Casey’s Instagram stories and posts I’m now always commenting as if we’re actually friends in real life. But hey! I also commented on Rusty’s post and he responded to me on Instagram saying “cheers!” That was exciting. Okay now that I’ve admitted my embarrassing stories, go watch GREEK. And let’s pray for a revival someday!!
